A Chat with Local Artist Kris Converse

Kris Converse

Here at At Home, we are proud to display (and sell!) the work of many local artists.  Over the course of the next few months, we plan to spend some time interviewing each one and featuring their answers here on the blog.

This week is all about local painter Kristia Converse. At Home has carried her paintings for the past few years now, and we cannot keep them on the walls. Though Converse does participate in a select few art fairs around the area, we are honored to be her one and only retail location.  Recently we connected with Kris to find out from her where she finds her inspiration, among other things. Here is what we learned:

AH: How long have you been painting?

KC: I have been painting for about 15 years, seriously for about 5.

AH: What is your favorite medium?

KC: Acrylic paint on canvas and boards.

 AH: What is your technique?

KC About 90% of my painting is done with palette knives. Layers on layers on layers of paint.

AH: What is your favorite thing to paint?

KC: Rural landscapes, barns and farmhouses. I also love painting flowers.

AH: Do you do custom work?

KC: I do, if I think the project is something I can do well.

AH: Did you go to school for art?

KC: No, completely self-taught. Still a work in progress :)

AH: What and/or who inspires you?

KC: Peeling paint, geometric shapes, the northern Michigan landscape, and my friends.

AH: Does creativity run in your family?

KC: Creative thinking certainly does. My daughter-in-law Laura is a talented artist and my sister Kim designs funky lamps and other art for her company "Scrambled Lamps".  Being exposed to so many artistic endeavors, our grandchildren are budding artists as well.

AH: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not painting?

KC: Spending time with friends and family, including our 5 grandchildren.

As you can see, Kris draws inspiration from a number of wonderful sources.  We feel very fortunate to be able to represent her at the store.  If you would like to join our contact list for notification of new Kris Converse paintings, please sign up below for our Kris Converse mailing list.
